SUNDAY, JUNE 8TH IS THE DAY OF PENTECOST
Pentecost, the third great festival of the Christian religion, ranks with Christmas and Easter. It celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church as a divine/human mystery. This year Edson Kileo will be confirmed on the Day of Pentecost. From the Pastor . . . Dear Christian friends: After the profession of faith in the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Third Article of the Nicene Creed goes on to say, “We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.” As we have heard again this year in Eastertide’s readings from the Acts of the Apostles, the Church’s apostolic teaching is the work of the Holy Spirit. Luther’s explanation of the Third Article of the Creed states, “I believe that by my own reason or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth and preserves it in union with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.” God uses the Gospel to gather the Church for himself, and he provides the Church to carry the Gospel to the world. It has been said that Jesus announced the Kingdom, but the Church came instead! Even though we profess the Church’s unity, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity, no one is in any danger of confusing the Church of God with the Kingdom of God. Even as our Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, his Body, is both truly God and truly man, so the Church, though divinely instituted, is also human, all too human. God allows this. He is patient with us. He institutes the Church instead of letting Jesus’s resurrection be the end of history. God institutes the Church as an event within the advent of the new creation that begins to dawn on the first Easter morning but is not fulfilled until we join in the marriage supper of the Lamb. As believers who live between that first Easter and the fullness of the Kingdom, we gather in the Church, the body constituted by the audible word of law and promise, and the visible word of the Triune God’s sacramental presence with us and in us. We gather in anticipation of the great and promised feast, living by God’s promise. Pentecost is the Spirit’s particular personal initiative to found the Church. In the Church, the Spirit frees us to be united with the Son who shows us the Father. The Holy Spirit is still working in the divine/human mystery of the Church to bring us, through word and sacraments, the means of grace, to saving faith.
